Wearing Socks While Sleeping Affects Both Your Body and Brain

If you don’t feel suffocated when sleeping with socks on, you might want to consider keeping them on come bedtime. According to a scientific study done by the Sleep Laboratory in Basel, Switzerland, there is a correlation between feet temperature and the amount of time it takes a person to fall asleep.
For the study, the lab looked at a group of men and how the warm parts on their body affected their ability to sleep. Blood vessels dilate when they become warm, which is called vasodilation. When the hands and feet warm during this process, the body’s internal temperature cools. This shortens the amount of time it takes for sleep to occur.

Additionally, blood pressure drops, which tells the brain to relax in preparation for sleep.

However, science isn’t always enough motivation for some people. The Today show posted the story on its Facebook page and asked people how they felt about sleeping with socks on.

Some commentators said that they get way too hot:
“I put them on if my feet are cold, but they come OFF before I go to sleep. Eww. They (sic) only thing worse than cold feet is hot feet LOL.”
“If you don’t hurts (sic) into flames first. Thanks, I’ll pass.”
Others, meanwhile, claim that they can’t breathe:
“Oh Heck NO! I breathe through my feet! I can’t stand socks..ever! I have to cover my entire body up to my neck but those toes have to hang out and breathe!”
Some make the attempt, but to no avail:
“II can fall asleep in them, but I kick them off sometime during the night..
And it seems like a smaller amount of commentators are already on board with the idea:
“The thought of NOT sleeping with socks on gives me the woobie joobies!!”

If you feel like your feet are too confined, have no fear: There’s another way to quickly achieve sleep without binding your toes. The National Sleep Foundation has a few suggestions:
– Place a heating pad or hot bottle of water between your feet.
– Put extra blankets at the foot of your bed.
– Pre-warm your feet by wearing slippers.
– Take a hot shower or bath.
– Use an electric blanket.

Happy sleeping!
